The Glaze Result Spectrum - many factors, but should fall in this spectrum
The Glaze (Technical)
The pictures in this website are all glazed with a Zinc Crystalline glaze. I choose to use this glaze because I believe it one the most unique and beautiful glazes I have ever seen. If you look at these glazes, I feel you will notice we are recreating nature. I am giving new energy and purpose to very simple chemicals. To me, it seems as if there is a rebirth with each Crystal. I also have always liked how no two are alike and the Crystals grow wherever they want.
The first step is to make a form (for example a vase), after brushing the glaze on the vase, the piece is loaded in the kiln. The kiln is fired to over 2300 degrees F and is then rapidly cooled multiple times depending on the desired results. Crystals are not painted or seeded, but rather randomly grow anywhere on the piece. Therefore, each piece is unique. The ashes included will also produce interesting and unique Crystals.
The firing process takes about 23 hours. The kiln must be brought to temperature and dropped and held there for periods of time. The halo/growth rings you see in this picture are a result of raising and lowering the temperature. At the right temperature, the nuclei forms from the attached center and shoots off individual needles. When there are enough needles in one location, crystals will develop taking thousands to form one crystal.
Thanks for reading about the process that took me hundreds of test firing to produce this glaze .I can add a lot more, but this is a good summary.
